Total Hip Replacement :-

The hip is one of the body’s most important joints. It plays an important role in nearly every basic function, from sitting and standing to walking and bending. Most people are born with healthy hip joints that facilitate a wide motion range without pain or discomfort. But over time, one or both hips can develop complications that stiffen the joints and cause significant discomfort on a day to day basis. Rather than cope with more physical limitations, discomfort, and a less active lifestyle, many patients turn to hip replacement surgery as a definitive solution to their problem. Today’s minimally invasive hip replacement procedures make it possible for patients to achieve restored joint function with as little inconvenience as possible.

These surgeries basically involves with removing damaged art of femur head with neck , acetabulam and replacing it with metal piece(cobalt chrome, titanium) and specialized plastic (highly cross linked polymer) .

What about post- operation?

You will spend few days in the hospital after your surgery. Your doctors and nurses will work to prevent complications of surgery, such as pneumonia. Full weight bearing walking can be started same day evening or next day depending upon pain tolerance and patients with the help of walker. Expect to begin a physical therapy regimen within 24 hours of your hip replacement. It will be important to continue these exercises for many weeks to facilitate a strong recovery.

Rehabilitation?

Patient requires to follow up with their schedule of physiotherapy to get hip range of motion excercises amd subsequently with strengthening of their gluteus muscles. During these patients are advicesd to use walker for support and avoid squatting and cross leg sitting. It is expected two to three months for patient to become completely normal.

Metal used ?

The acetabular shell or socket is made of titanium which accommodates an inner insert made of highly cross-linked polyethylene. On the femoral side, the stem is made of titanium and can accommodate different sized ceramic and metallic heads.

Total Knee Replacement :-

Knee is the largest joint of human body and joint pain, stiffness, deformity mostly in elderly population as a result of degenerative changes in cartilage subsequently in bony surface at the ends of thigh bone i.e. femur and leg bone i.e. tibia. Apart from aging, post-traumatic injuries and metabolic diseases also involves knee joint.

These problems can be tackled conservatively with symptomatic treatment and lifestyle changes, physiotherapy and exercises but beyond a point where patients are no longer able to perform day today routine activities and quality of life index (PQLI) decreases, then patient may require total knee replacement or knee arthroplasty surgery for a pain free stable and functional joint.

These surgeries basically involves removing damaged arthritic surfaces of femur, tibia and knee cap and replacing it with metal piece(cobalt chrome, titanium) and specialized plastic (highly cross linked polymer).

Who requires this?

If you have osteoarthritis or joint damage that has not adequately responded to more conservative methods of treatment, such as physical therapy, knee replacement is considered safe and highly effective. Results still vary from patient to patient. It is important to consult your problem with joint replacement surgeon to determine if total knee replacement is right for you.
